An email list is a great way to connect with your audience. Social media algorithms are always changing and it can be difficult to actually reach your audience on those platforms. If any social media platforms went away, and that was the only way you connected with your followers than you would lose your audience. Those two factors make an email list very appealing.
Since an email list is such a great way to communicate with your audience, it’s important to always focus on growing your list! You want it to be easy for anyone visiting your website to subscribe to your list. Visitors may not want to subscribe right away, so it’s important to give them the option to subscribe in many different locations and at different times. It’s important to also include an enticing opt-in offer to really get your visitors excited about signing up. It could be free shipping if you’re selling products, a helpful guide or video, or something similar. Make sure, too, that the offer is giving value to your visitor.
Above The Fold
You want to give your visitors the option to subscribe right off the bat. You want to have a signup above the fold on your site (a newspaper term that means on the top of the page—in website terms it means what you see before you do any scrolling). You could put something like “sign up for our newsletter” but that doesn’t sound very exciting. You want to help your visitor. You want to give them something they’ll like—something they’ll find useful. “Get access to my free resource library”, “get my free 10-step guide to a successful startup” or “get free shipping on your first order” sounds a bit more enticing.
Sidebar or Footer
You want to make sure your visitors can opt-in to your email list from almost any page on your website. Having an opt-in in a sidebar or the footer is a great way to do this. Make sure you entice them with something that will be helpful to them.
Pop ups are pretty controversial. Many people hate them (myself included) but they do convert! Make sure to include an enticing opt in offer to make your visitor want to sign up for your email list.
Content Upgrades In The Post
In your blog post you can provide a content upgrade that your visitor will only get when they subscribe to your email list. It should go hand in hand with your blog post and provide an added value. Some suggestions would be a free cheat sheet for the steps talked about in your post, an in-depth guide on the topic talked about in the post, or a worksheet.
At The End Of A Post
Once your visitor has finished your blog post, they will have formed more of an opinion of you since they first arrived at your site. Hopefully by this time you’ve won them over! Give them the option to subscribe once again here. Make sure to entice them with something that will add value for them. It can be directly related to the blog post or it can be a general offer.
By enticing your visitors with helpful resources and making it easy for them to subscribe from various places on your website, you’ll increase your chances of growing your list. Remember to stay authentic and don’t be gimmicky. Many times I’ve signed up for an email list to get the free resource only to find it’s not what I expected and not very helpful. Make sure to always provide honest, quality content to your audience.
